Drum Sticks with Soy Sauce and Honey

I read about it in a novel I borrowed from the library last week. The book I took form the library shelves by chance turned out to be an amazing book and very close to my heart. It's called "Girl in Translation".  I see myself, my aunt, my granny, and my daughter in the story line.  It takes me to the early days of my motherhood in Germany but not only that, it also brings me back to my childhood memories and feelings. It also reminds me of what I heard from my aunt and pa about their childhood.

Any ways, some where in the story the narrator talks about the delicious drum sticks with soy sauce and honey her mother offered as an x-mas present to her teacher. I immediately googled the recipe and was dazzled by this one.  It's simply delicious.

for 6 drum sticks you need to make the marinate sauce with 2 tbsp olive oil, 1 tbsp sesame seed oil, 3 garlic cloves, 5 tbsp honey, 1/4 cup soy sauce and salt and pepper.
I let it drum sticks marinated for a day.
pre heat the oven to 200C and let them be there fro a bout an hour.

Indeed the smell of it drove my cats crazy. They came to sit on the kitchen floor and next to the oven, waiting for their share!!

This is the fourth kitchen I am writing about in this blog. I started in my A'dam Kitchen, continued with my left handed kitchen in Erlangen which was followed up with my Leidse one till last week.
Listen to this music while preparing this delicious autumn recipe :-)
Parsnip, sweet potatoes, red onion with a bit of olive oil AND Za'atar
I warned you I'll use Za'atar in almost anything I cook!

Musakhan ala Yotam / موسی خان خوش آمدی

A friend of mine on Face Book shared the recipe this weekend. It sounded interesting and delicious. Once I shared it with my friends with the note of "I'll make it on one of these days", an American friend of mine who used to live in the middle east for quite some time directed me to the "original" recipe which is served in bread roles. My version is made only with chicken breast and was served with rice (with what els as an Iranian could I serve the dish?!)
It was the first time in my life I used za'atar, which I immediately felt in love with its taste and texture and I shall use it quite often as of now!
Needless to say everyone at the table was satisfied with the result. Welcome to our home Musakhan!

  • 1chicken breast cut in small pieces
  • 1 big onion chopped into dices
  • 2 garlic cloves, crushed
  • 4 tbsp extra virgin olive oils
  • 1 thinly sliced lime
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp curry (that's my version)
  • 1tsp Chinese all spices
  • 1 generous tbsp sumac
  • 2 generous tbsp za'atar
  • salt and pepper as you wish
  • 20 g butter
  • 50 pine nuts
  • 4 generous tbsp finely chopped parsley

mix everything except butter, pine nuts and parsley in a bowl and let it marinate for 24 hours.

Put the marinated chicken in the oven that is pre-heated to 200 C for 30 minutes. In the meantime, heat the butter and stir pine nuts till they turn gold. Once the chicken is ready, add pine nuts and chopped parsley to it and serve.

East meets West

I'm gonna call this recipe an stupidly delicious one and I guess you'll agree with me once you read or make it!

I saw it on Face Book this morning and since I knew with Sanli being away, it's going to be a super busy afternoon with coming home, doing the grocary, picking the bike and fetching Soline from her after school under a shower, making dinner and taking care of the boys I decided to make it.
It's basically pizza with noodles in a pan! What you need is:
noodles, Salami or in our case Chorizo, green paprika, pizza/pasta sauce and grated cheese.
what you've got to do is to boil the water and let noodles boil until cooked. Then mix it with an egg and fry it in a pan.

Once you turn it upside down, you can treat it as a pizza dough, put the pizza sauce and its topping on it, close the lid and let it fry for 2-3 minutes!

In 10 minutes you've got some reasonably delicious and oddly designed pizza to enjoy!
